The Tigua, Southern Tiwa people who built the Ysleta Mission in 1682 after the Pueblo Revolt, have been here 340-plus years. Corpus Christi de la Ysleta del Sur at 9501 Socorro Rd is the oldest continuously operating parish in Texas. The silver dome is visible from Alameda Avenue. The Tigua tribal acequia system, the original irrigation canals built in 1682, helped establish the entire Lower Valley's agricultural economy and still exists. The Ysleta del Sur Pueblo's tribal enterprises include Speaking Rock Entertainment Center at 122 S. Old Pueblo Dr, a 24/7 entertainment venue re-authorized for Class II Indian gaming by the Supreme Court in June 2022.

Alameda Avenue, SH-20, is the spine. It runs east from downtown El Paso through Ysleta with the commercial strip concentrated between Loop 375 and the Zaragoza intersection. Ysleta High School sits directly on Alameda at 8600 Alameda Ave. FM-659, South Zaragoza Road, is the north-south connector through the heart of Ysleta, with the Ysleta-Zaragoza International Bridge at 797 S. Zaragoza. The Loop 375 Cesar Chavez Border Highway cuts through central Ysleta, linking the four El Paso ports and providing I-10 access about two miles west. There is an ongoing braided ramp project at Loop 375 and FM-659. The Zaragoza bridge truck queue backs up on S. Zaragoza and the Loop 375 approach, and trucks sitting in queue in 100-degree heat develop mechanical problems.

Ascarate Park at 6900 Delta Dr, El Paso County's largest public park with a 48-acre lake, is the neighborhood gathering spot, packed on Sundays with families fishing for catfish and crappie. The vehicle stock along Alameda is older, maintenance is deferred, and the heat kills batteries. Monsoon events flood lower pockets near the river. The community is over 81 percent Hispanic.
